In poker, it’s important to understand the basics of betting. Betting is the most important component of any poker game, and it’s hard to play effectively if you don’t understand the procedures of the various betting structures.
Fixed-Limit
Also just called “limit games,” these games have a standard, fixed bet that must be adhered to at all times. Typically, this standard bet doubles in later rounds. For example, a $3/$6 limit game means that for the early betting rounds, bets and raises must be in multiples of $3, and in later rounds, bets must be in multiples of $6. The number of times players can raise is usually capped, but it may vary between different poker rooms. In stud games, if a pair appears before the betting limits double, players have the option of betting the standard amount or the big bet amount.
Pot-Limit
In pot-limit games, a player may bet anything from the amount of the big blind up to the amount that is in the pot at that time. The pot is calculated with the potential raiser’s call included. For example, if there is a $20 pot and it is $5 to call, a player may bet $30, $5 for the call and $25 for the pot-sized raise. If a player is not sure how much to bet, he can always announce “pot” before putting in chips.
No-Limit
A no-limit game is as it sounds – standard poker rules apply, but players can bet any amount ranging from the size of the big blind to their entire stack. If a player bets his entire stack, he is going “all-in” and players must match as much of the bet as they can to call. If they don’t have enough to match the bet, they can only win as much as they can match. If they have more, they may be able to raise, but can only win additional funds from other players; they cannot force the all-in player out of the pot with additional betting. |
